CME was founded in 1973 as an environmental consulting firm focused on natural resource management. It worked with entities such as the New England River Basins Commission, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Long Island Commission on Water Quality. Its specialized expertise was highly sought-after and soon its assignments took CME beyond the U.S. borders to places such as North Africa, Malaysia and Indonesia.

As CME expanded its client base and took on increasingly complex contracts, it discovered the potential for increased success if it was able to accommodate additional service requests. In the 1980s CME took the initiative and grew to include land surveying and civil engineering in its offering of technical services. In 2001, CME merged with Chandler, Palmer & King a highly-respected Land Surveying and Engineering firm that had continually operated since the 1870s. The addition of these services would lead to a whole other realm of opportunities for the company.

CME found a perfect match partnering with municipalities and developers on site design and infrastructure projects in the region. As that portion of the business flourished, CME added a specialized structural and transportation group to take on complex building and bridge assignments, a creative architectural design team to handle commercial property development and historic restoration projects and a talented planning staff to work with communities to clarify their vision and define their goals for the future. With all of these services in its repertoire, CME has been able to establish an uncommon diversity of skills and capabilities.
