Project Summary

CME assisted a growing New England town in reinvigorating their downtown park, known as Simonzi Park, to make it a place for residents to come and enjoy. The town was seeking to improve the walk-ability and facilities set along the Quinebaug River. CME worked closely with the town over a number of years to make improvements including stabilizing a portion of the riverbank and providing the design of canoe access/launching area.
Once those projects were complete, the Town desired to extend the existing segmented trails into one larger river walk. CME prepared the design for the continuation of the park trails and prepared a park management plan to reduce erosion from pedestrians and stormwater. As the use of the park areas grew, the Town wanted to create a place for the community to gather. CME prepared the site and architectural design for an open-air pavilion that could be used for town events, but would primarily serve as the Town’s farmers market. The design included lengthening of the existing path to connect to the new market along the River. The Marketplace pavilion provides an attractive, accommodating venue for local vendors and customers of the seasonal farmers’ market in addition to serving as a gathering place for special town events.
